Murcott Energy was consulted to assess the strength and durability of a vertical axis wind turbine.
The design was required to meet the following criteria:
╼ Deployable and light weight
╼ Low material and manufacturing costs
╼ Able to withstand extreme wind speeds (80mph)
╼ Design life of 20 years
Murcott Energy employed static, dynamic and fatigue studies to assess the conceptual design, and then recommended changes as part of an optimisation process.
The result was an efficient , economic and reliable design the such that material and geometry was adequately refined to achieve the design criteria listed.
Murcott Energy was consulted to support the verification and optimisation of a generator test rig.
The rig featured a motor and gearbox assembly, that drove a generator for testing via v-belt and pully transmission. The rig was required to accommodate loads such as shock and vibration, belt tension loads and the weight of the components.
Murcott Energy employed static and dynamic studies to assess the conceptual design and then recommended changes as part of an optimisation process.
╼ Buckling
╼ Modal
╼ Static- linear
╼ Random vibration and shock analyses
The analyses enabled for an optimised design where a cost effective balance between stiffness, strength, weight and functionality was achieved.
The test rig is now used for testing and verifying the generators.
